London has an enormous student population, and it’s easy to see why. The city was recently ranked the best student city in the whole world, thanks to its outstanding universities, promising jobs market, the quality of life and its cultural diversity. With so many young people descending on London to learn English or study for a degree, it’s only natural that certain areas of the city have started to become student havens.
Top London Neighbourhoods
Many parts of London have naturally started to attract students, especially neighbourhoods which are more affordable or offer an easy commute to the largest universities. These are the best areas for international students to make their home – take a look at HFS London’s guide to student neighbourhoods and browse the homestays in these areas:
-
Putney
You don’t often find areas of South London being attractive to students, because of the price associated with homes south of the Thames. However, this leafy neighbourhood with traditional pubs and a rural feel is a great place to set up base. It’s also in zone 2, so even though it has a rural feel you’re connected to central London in 5-10 minutes. While many students are priced out of the area, it’s close by to Roehampton University so there is a student population here. One of the best ways to afford to live in a lovely suburb like Putney is by choosing homestay accommodation. The area has a plethora of large detached period properties and Victorian terraces with plenty of room for guests.
-
Islington
Islington ranks high with students because it is located in zone 2 but is still affordable. With great transport links for getting all across the city in minimal time, Islington is also a great nightlife spot. It’s home to plenty of independent restaurants and bars which boast student-friendly prices.
-
Camden Town
Quirky Camden is a huge attraction for students and tourists alike. The hustle and bustle of the famous market and the unbeatable live music venues make Camden Town a great student hangout – so if you want to be in the thick of the action then why not live here too!
-
Stratford
This area of London has undergone huge regeneration over the past decade. Stratford is a great place for students to live as it has modern amenities but is still quite a bit cheaper than other neighbourhoods. You may have to travel a little further to get to college or central London, but some of the hipster hangouts like Spitalfields and Old Street are only a couple of stops away on the tube.
-
Brixton
Brixton is a cultural dream, which has naturally attracted inquisitive students for quite some time. The village has plenty of affordable bars, eateries and shops to suit the student pocket, and a strong community vibe makes it a great place to live. Brixton is well connected to the rest of the London via the Victoria line and two train stations.
