HOSTING OVERSEAS STUDENTS – Acton
Acton is an area in West London sitting within the London borough of Ealing, 6 miles west of Charing Cross. A primarily residential area that has so far managed to avoid the gentrification and overpricing of surrounding areas, it is slowly being regenerated into a friendly haven of affordable housing and family-led communities. Acton was nicknamed the ‘Soapsud Isle’ in years gone by for its abundance of launderettes and soft local water; a considerably better and more positive nickname than other such neighbourhoods in London have ended up with!
At HFS London, we’re often asked to find homestay accommodation for overseas students in Acton, so if you live in the area, read on for more information on how to become a homestay host.
Why Acton?
Acton is principally residential and is home to the biggest housing estate in West London, the South Action estate. Comprising 2,000 homes and almost entirely revamped and refurbished, the community spirit is ever-evident here and it’s a fantastic place to live. Acton also plays home to a high street scattered with independent restaurants, bars and shops; but without the bustle and big budgets of central London!
The reputation of Acton is positive and its this good name that makes it an often-favoured location by overseas students looking for somewhere to stay in the UK while they study or complete work placements.
What is there to do in Acton?
Of course, living in Acton, you probably don’t pay much attention to what there is to do and see in the area – because your weekdays are often spent travelling into and out of other areas of London and your weekends in relaxing and pottering about your house! Looking upon Acton with a fresh pair of eyes, you’ll soon realise that there’s plenty on offer that can give a great experience and impression of the UK that highlights the brilliance of our wonderful city.
Eat some of Britain’s Best Baking at Cake Me Baby
Chintz-y afternoon tea, this isn’t, but it’s a must-visit for fans of the Great British Bake Off (or international spin-offs)! Bespoke bakes are for sale alongside a variety of teas and coffees, and you’ll find a selection of gluten-free and vegan options to fit differing dietary requirements. The café is family friendly and an informal and friendly place to chill and chat.
Wander around Gunnersbury Park
A public park just a few minutes’ walk out of Acton, Gunnersbury Park is a brilliant outdoors green space and has just enjoyed the completion of a major restoration project funded by the National Lottery. There’s a café and a museum on-site, as well as several lakes and ponds. The park is open from 7am-dusk every day, so you can head along whenever you fancy some fresh air.
Shop local at Acton Market
This is no ordinary London market: but rather a social and community enterprise run by the community it operates in – a true demonstration of what a fantastic place Acton is! You’ll find local traders in the heart of the town centre Wednesday-Saturday from 11am-5pm, including street food vendors, bakers, delicatessen producers and locally sourced ingredients. Why not stock up on items and cook dinner with your homestay guest/s?
