Ways to improve your English
There are many reasons why you may want to learn a new language; you might want to improve your job prospects or just want to keep your brain active. Language skills are in high demand across the world, so becoming multilingual could definitely lead to more opportunities. Learning a language certainly isn’t easy, and it takes a long time to become fluent. If you’re looking to improve your language skills this year, then we’ve put together some tips for you.
Take a class
Yes there are books you can read and tapes you can listen to – but nothing is quite as effective as an interactive language lesson. At a language class you will develop all skills, including reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will develop your understanding of the language in question and have a dedicated tutor to answer any questions. Do some research into the language schools in your area – there may be a professional organisation for English, Spanish French etc or you may find courses in many languages at the same place.
Watch films and programmes in a different language
A good way to pick up phrases and words in your own time is to watch films in the language you are trying to learn. Put the subtitles on but try and understand the dialogue without reading in your first language unless you need to. This is a great way to improve your skills and understanding because the actors will be speaking fast and using common phrases and idioms.
Get the app
There are many free apps available that make learning a new language easy and convenient. You can practice on-the-go with apps such as Duolingo, Memrise and the Rosetta Stone Travel app. You can master the basics or become fluent at a pace that suits you.
Work or study in a country which speaks the language
The fastest and most effective way to learn a language is to throw yourself in the deep end by moving to a new country which has it as its first language. Each and every day you’ll be forced to speak the language and communicate – it will be really hard at first but will soon become second nature. Not only will you vastly improve your language skills but you’ll also learn more about the culture, and everything will fall into place to fuel your understanding of the dialect.
Make 2017 the year you learn a second or third language.
